What to Wear for an Engagement Photoshoot in the Cotswolds

Your engagement photoshoot is such a special chapter in your wedding journey - a moment for just the two of you, captured somewhere beautiful. But once the date is in the diary, one of the first questions I get asked is: “What should we wear?”

So here’s your go-to guide for choosing outfits that will not only photograph beautifully, but help you feel relaxed, confident, and most importantly - like yourselves.

Keep it Comfortable

The most important rule? Wear something that feels like you. Your engagement photos are just as mich about telling your story as your wedding day will be, so avoid anything too far outside your usual style or comfort zone. If you don’t usually wear heels or tight shirts, don't wear them. If you love floaty dresses, jumpers, boots, or layers - lean into that.

Bonus: when you feel comfortable, you look relaxed - and that’s exactly the vibe we want.

Choose Colours That Compliment the Location

The Cotswolds is known for its soft, earthy palette - think honey-toned stone, muted greens, wildflower meadows, and rolling countryside. To complement that, go for neutral tones and natural colours: creams, beige, soft blues, olives, terracotta, rust, sage, or even warm pastels.

Avoid bright neon or busy graphics/logos, which can distract from the connection between you and your partner (and clash with the softer countryside aesthetic).

Add Texture and Layers

Layers add dimension to your images - think cosy knits, jackets, scarves, or linen shirts left open over tees. These give us movement, options, and even something to play with during the shoot.

Textures like wool, denim, cotton and linen photograph beautifully in natural light and add a romantic, rustic feel to your session.

Bring a Second Option

If time and location allow, bringing a second outfit can add variety to your photos - maybe one more casual and one a little dressier. For example: a floaty dress and boots for the meadow, and then jeans and a jumper for a relaxed woodland walk.

Don’t Forget the Details

Shoes matter — especially if we’re heading into fields or down country paths. Think practical but pretty.

Hair & makeup — some couples use the shoot as a trial run for their wedding hair and or make up. Not essential, but it can be a confidence booster and an opportunity to see what you'll look like in your photos for your wedding day!

Hands — close-up shots happen, so clean nails and moisturised hands go a long way.

Engagement photoshoots are all about getting comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. That starts with what you wear and the best outfit is the one that helps you feel confident, comfortable and you!
